Well, for CBS Bannu ... the worst that can happen is getting old. As long as they are not wet, loose or small critters (which are not in a closed container in a dry place), they will be fine. I think it could be an expiration date, not an expiration date. Did you know that some refrigerator packages that expire within 10 days of opening are labeled just like that, so we throw away the contents and buy more? Don't know what tears!

I would say your mother was on a very strict budget because a pound of fresh bread costs only a few dollars. I have some that I just threw away, not because they expired, but because they were Italian bread and didn't taste good. They are old but not very old. However, after a while, they have no taste. You can make CBS bread with stale bread or toast (also with hips). It's as economical as it sounds.
