Lithium Battery Backup
Lead-acid batteries are the backbone of data center backup systems and many other applications that require high capacity and rechargeability. Despite the gradual improvement of these batteries over time, they have some drawbacks: they are very aggressive, have a limited lifespan, are heavy and take up a lot of space. As lithium batteries for electric and hybrid vehicles are developing rapidly, they could find applications in data centers if their high costs can be significantly reduced. (Lithium batteries are about five times more expensive than lead-acid batteries of the same capacity.) The main advantages of lithium batteries are that they weigh about a quarter and take up about half the space of equivalent lead-acid batteries. However, if the cost cannot be significantly reduced, its use is limited to the data center.
