Rooting
Android comes standard with security measures to prevent you or strangers from playing with your phone too much. Rooting your phone bypasses these security measures and allows you to customize it in ways that would otherwise be impossible. You can even replace the Android OS that came with your phone with something else, such as Cyanogenmod, one of the many Android alternatives. In particular, rooting is gaining root access to an operating system, allowing you to change or replace parts of the operating system that you don't want to tamper with.
